1984 Matt Bianco

Whose side are you on?

What's not to like about this CD? It's fun, upbeat and damn catchy.  I am a big fan of 80's music in general, so mixing pop sensibility and jazz/samba beats makes for a disc with a lot of playtime for me. The title track "Whose side are you on?" always has me at least tapping my foot (which can be interesting when in bumper to bumper traffic). I also find it funny that Danny White re-used the basic riff of Matt's mood for the song Freeze Thaw off of Basia's solo debut. I have to say I truly did enjoy the songs they did off this album when I saw them live in April 2005.

Time and Tide

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, sometime around 1990, I saw the video for Time and Tide on VH1. The next day, I walked across the street to my favorite CD shop (I couldn't drive yet) and picked this up. I think I listened to Time and Tide (the song) about 10 times and then started to explore the rest of the album. There is just something about this album that no matter how grumpy I get, no matter how bad of a day I have had, I can queue up this CD and I'm transcended to another world. Two minutes into Promises and I'm calm and relaxed. There's not a dud on this album, and it remains one of my all time favorites of ANY album. A little insight on this album, this is mainly about Basia and Danny White's blossoming relationship at the time.
1988 Basia

Self Titled Promo CD

I picked this little gem up on eBay. It's a wonderful rare collection of rare live recordings from the Time and Tide tour from 1988. I so wish I could have seen one of those shows. But heck, I was in 8th grade and as I mentioned earlier I didn't discover Basia until 1990. The four extended remixes of songs from Time and Tide are nice variations to mix up anybodies Basia collection. (and no, its not for sale)
1990 Basia

London Warsaw New York

Building upon the huge success of Time and Tide, Basia and Danny turn it up a few on LWNY. Despite the fact that songs such as Cruising for a Bruising and Brave New Hope are about their break-up, it does nothing but make this a better album. The grooves are stronger, but at the same time a little more produced. The almost raw pop-jazz of Time and Tide is a bit more polished. The singles Baby You're mine and Cruising for a Bruising are "smooth jazz" classics by now. I hope one of these days I'll have somebody I can dedicate the song Reward to, the story of trials and tribulations to move on to a "reward" of true love are very moving. The Stevie Wonder cover, Until You Come Back To Me sounds like it was written just for Basia. Copernicus makes me want to get up and dance. Again, another solid album and why I spent so many years wondering, "Basia, WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU?"
1990 Basia

Brave New Hope (EP)

You do not have a true Basia collection unless you have this EP. The (12" Remix) of Until You Come Back To Me is one of my favorite songs of all time. The jazzy almost hip-hop backbeat blows the LP version away. I remember when I first got my driver's license it was a moment of blissful liberation jamming out to this cruising around Naperville in my mom's Bonneville. Simply a remixing masterpiece. The other remixes of Brave New Hope, Cruising for a Bruising and From Now On are top notch as well. And the top notch Basia jams Give Me That,  Masquerade, Forgive and Forget and Come to Heaven are damn good tunes as well. I never quite understood why the ended up being B-sides. Again, if you just have the main albums and don't have this, you're missing out!
1994 Basia

The Sweetest Illusion

Being one that got into Basia in 1990, this was a long 4 years (of course not as long as the TEN I waited after) to get some new Basia tunes. I remember popping this in my CD changer as soon as I bought it in the Best Buy parking lot. I was recently disappointed by another band's follow up album that I don't even remember anymore but I do remember thinking "please don't suck, please don't suck". 30 seconds into Drunk on Love and I breathed a long sigh of relief. This album did in fact "not suck". Then Third Time Lucky hits you with a cheerful samba... But then a gear shift, Yearning starts off so somber.. But then.. the chorus kicks in.. "and now, I'm yearning no more" and to this day I have a hard time choking back a tear. Other highlights of this album are "An Olive Tree" which I must say they had an awesome performance of when I saw them live this year. The title track Sweetest Illusion and My Cruel Ways are toe tapping favorites. Overall not as good as the first two albums, it was a solid effort.
1995 Basia

Basia On Broadway

Although I had always though that this album was released to complete Basia's contract with Sony/Epic, I am so glad they did. Being that until this year I never had seen Basia live this gave me a glimpse into what it would be like. It's a solid play list that plays like a greatest hits album. Her live performance of Half A Minute is what led me to find out about Matt Bianco during what I shall now call the "dark years" from 1998-2004.  I love the rawness of this recording, Basia's voice is not processed, it almost as if It's a really really good bootleg. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's a bad recording, but so often you hear a live album that sounds like the studio album with an echo (example Depeche Mode 101), the raw sound of this album is what made me think that they recorded all the shows, and just remastered this to finish out the Sony contract. The only oddball of this album is "Dzien Sie Budzi", sung solely in polish which roughly translates to "The day is Awakening".  I do have to admit that the Beavis in me thinks it sounds like she's saying "Chase a booty" but nevertheless it just goes to show I would buy a CD of Basia reading the phonebook. Several times, I have put on my comfy headphones, laid back and closed my eyes and imagined the concert in my head.
1998 Basia

Clear Horizon (Best Of)

Man, was I excited when this came out with nothing new for four years again, the three "new" tracks on this album Waters of March, Go For You and Angel's Blush gave me hope. I was thinking, oh man, new songs, and they're good! Oh Man, a new album has to be just around the corner, right? RIGHT? R I G H T? Wrong.. Anyway the three "new" songs are worth the price of admission on this one.
2004 Matt Bianco (featuring Basia)

Matt's Mood

So somehow for the last 7 years (since the last time I updated my old Basia site) at least a few times a month I would get people that would go back to my main site, find my personal web page and send me an email asking me, "where is Basia, where did she go, is there a new album coming out". On occasion I would even get some emails from people that for who knows why thought that they were writing TO Basia when they emailed me. My first glimmer of hope was in early 2004 when Peter White responded to my email telling me about the new Matt Bianco album. I kept my eye out every so often but never really saw anything and kind of lost hope again. Then, one day I get one of those whacky emails, except this person is asking me for a pre-sale password for a Miami show. I think to myself, okay this person is smoking some serious crack. Then I go to ticketmaster and type Basia, and HOLY S!&@, this lady isn't on crack. So I hit amazon.com and the album isn't out yet, I find the import and overnight shipping later Matt's mood is mine. If you have read my entire discography you know I was going through the "please don't suck" syndrome as I popped it in. And, praise whatever cosmic force brought Basia, Mark and Danny back together, on the 10th year since I had a new Basia album, they made it, and it was good. I literally listened to this album every day for several weeks. Opening with Ordinary Day, the smooth samba beat and Basia's vocals was like several years of prayers answered, and it only got better from there.
